Patricia Hoen

My name is Patricia Hoen and I have always had a passion for health and fitness. When asked to do research and writing for It's All Health I was thrilled to have the opportunity to learn more about healthy living and to share my findings with the world.

Out of high school I was recruited to the University of North Carolina at Wilmington to run track and field, and ever since I tasted the salt in the air, Wilmington has been my home. Although my track career is behind me now, I still make an effort to run everyday. Recently, I have picked tennis and soccer up again and have loved every bit of it. I grew up riding and teaching horseback riding, but unfortunately, I haven't been unable to pursue that hobby recently (horses are expensive).

I also love to read and write. It is my goal to give my subscribers the most accurate information out there by weeding out and combining the endless amount of information on the internet (don't worry - I'm good at this). My career in research and writing originally began with writing about national security issues, in particular, issues with the state and terrorism. Now I am attempting to further my career in a subsection of the health world by writing for It's All Health and studying for my CPT and Medical Terminology exam. On top of that, I am learning Spanish for a few different reasons. I plan to get my PhD in the year future, but I haven't figured out exactly what I want to study.

Conquering ED

on Tuesday, 01 June 2010. Written by Patricia Hoen

Sure, maybe the first time it was nerves. Maybe the second time it was alcohol. Maybe it’s just time for a new girlfriend. But maybe…it’s something else. And more importantly, maybe it could be easily fixed. As with many things, the first step in conquering erectile dysfunction is admitting that there is a problem. About 5% of men in the 40 year-old age group experience consistent, long term ED. About 20% of 60 year-old men and up experience ED. If you can get an erection most of the time and you are in this age-group, then this probably isn’t a problem that requires medication. But if you can’t get an erection 50% + of the time, then it’s probably time to explore your options.

Can the Gulf Oil Spill Affect Your Health?

on Tuesday, 01 June 2010. Written by Patricia Hoen

Public Health Debate 101

BP’s Gulf oil disaster has rocked the nation for the last month.  Issues of stability, and who is ultimately to be held accountable for this disaster have been widely debated by the Obama Administration and large media conglomerates. While little consensus has been reached as to who is to blame, one thing remains clear: the lack of the ability to effectively tackle the problem at the base of the spill has resulted in catastrophic consequences. The hole must be plugged, and fast. But despite this elongated debate that has resulted in little effective action, there is one issue that has not been widely addressed – can this oil spill affect my health?

Migraines 101

on Wednesday, 26 May 2010. Written by Patricia Hoen

If you have migraines, or think you may be getting a migraine, you are not alone. About 11% of the population experiences migraines on a regular basis. Symptoms of migraines first appear in a broad range of ages, but they usually occur from the ages of 10 to 46 years old. Women tend to have these headaches more regularly then men, but studies show that pregnancy reduces the frequency of migraines in women. The average migraine lasts 6-48 hours.
